Many things change with time, but your uni is your uni for life. For most of us, our student days were a time when our view of the world expanded, when we met people who would become mates for life, when we laid the foundations for careers and truly stepped into adulthood.
It might sound cheesy, but these words rang true as Science alumni shared memories from a UQ journey that began more than half a century ago. The 50+ reunion luncheon wasn’t just an event; it was a tapestry of stories punctuated by laughter over past mischief and misadventure. Some old friends reconnected. There were tales of first lectures in crowded halls, of exploration and experiments that sparked lifelong curiosity, of favourite haunts and marriage courtships.
UQ has changed a fair bit since those days. There was a clear sense of shared history, even for those who hadn’t been back to campus in many years. Like coming home. As people spoke, you could almost see the marches and activism of the 1970s, feel the jitters of first-in-family students. Everyone nodded at the mention of jacaranda fever and looming exams.
Connections like these, some new, some spanning decades, are the heartbeat of the Faculty of Science community. They remind us that learning isn’t confined to classrooms; it’s a lifelong pursuit ignited by life-changing experience. And it is UQ’s great privilege to be part of that - to be your university is for life.

Next year - Class of 1976 and earlier!
