Big goals were met on Giving Day 2025, but that’s just one part of the story. Arguably, the more important part is the generosity of alumni, staff and the broader Science community who made it possible. That collective generosity has a profound impact, including for students like Viet Trieu Quang Tran and Ian Leung. Both Science Leaders Scholarship recipients, they’ve shared how donor support has made a difference in their lives.
Ian is in his third year of the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) program, specialising in Ecology & Conservation Biology and Marine Biology.
“As a first-generation Australian interstate student, I have been struggling to support myself and meet my financial obligations, facing pressure to place employment ahead of my education. My scholarship has alleviated the financial pressure, enabling me to progress in my academic journey and take advantage of leadership opportunities at the university, " he says.
Quang is in his third year of the Bachelor of Engineering and Bachelor of Science dual program with a keen interest in quantum physics.
“With the financial assistance provided by the scholarship, I am able to dedicate more time and resources to my studies, particularly in my focused areas of electrical engineering and quantum condensed-matter physics. This scholarship has enabled me to engage deeply with cutting-edge research and participate in additional projects that enhance my practical and theoretical understanding. My career aspiration is to become a leader in the field of quantum computing, specifically in the application of machine learning technologies.”
A reminder that behind every gift is a story of hope and aspiration.
Comments like these remind us why we give: because when we come together, we create ripples of impact that reach far beyond UQ, changing lives and empowering others to make the world a better place.
This Giving Day, 182 donors gave a total of $167,016 to Faculty of Science causes and initiatives. If you are one of those donors, thank you!
