Alumni experiences

A weekend at Heron Island Research Station

Turtle hatchlings scurrying across the beach, stingrays lumbering in waters so clear they can be seen from the jetty, the eerie lament of mutton birds – these are just some of the sights and sounds that greeted University of Queensland grads and guests at a Heron Island Alumni Weekend. See for yourself in this YouTube video (04:15):

Douglas Ormonde Butler Memorial Lecture 2024: Destiny vs Disease

What role do genetics play in the way we experience disease? As our understanding of the genome grows, are better prevention, treatment and health care personalisation just around the corner? An interdisciplinary panel of UQ experts discussed everything from susceptibility and severity to vaccine efficacy and the treatment of life-threatening illness – all in the context of genetic make-up.
