Can we save daylight? Queensland perspectives

3 Mar 2025

SunsetThe University of Queensland School of the Environment and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland is holding a public forum on daylight saving in Queensland with an excellent panel of speakers to present some critical perspectives.

The event - Can we save daylight? Queensland perspectives - will be in UQ's Parnell Building at St Lucia on the afternoon of Friday 14 March.

Keynote speaker, UQ's Associate Professor Thomas Siegler, will be exploring the complexities of daylight savings, as part of a healthy and balanced debate.

“Love it or hate it, the daylight saving discussion is alive and well in Australia," he said.

"In Queensland, where the last referendum on the topic was now 33 years ago, advocates continue to push for the implementation of daylight saving. On the contrary, there is now evidence to suggest that sleep scientists and others in the medical field recommend against it.

"This event is a great opportunity to hear from a range of perspectives on the topic, including politicians, advocates, and those with alternative proposals.”

Other speakers include the Hon. Wilson Tucker MLC (former representative of the Daylight Saving Party of Western Australia), Mr Graeme Brittenden (The Real Time Initiative),  Mr Jason Furze and Mr David Jones (Daylight saving for SEQ), and Dr Oliver Rawasdeh (UQ).
