Mountains
A striking view showing an uplifted landscape and an active normal fault. The sharp triangular slopes (facets) along the hillside mark the fault line, while the high-elevation surface in the background shows the strength of uplift that has raised the land—over 1,000 meters of river incision reveal the powerful tectonic forces shaping the region.

New research has revealed unique mountain formation and higher-than-expected risk of catastrophic earthquakes in Türkiye.

The study was conducted by The University of Queensland’s Honorary Associate Professor Tonguç UysalProfessor Jian-xin Zhao and their former visiting PhD student Dr Tunahan Aykut from Istanbul Technical University in Turkey (currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pau in the Adour Region in France).
