The University of Queensland's Dr Christopher Lawson is at the changing face of citizen science. His work explores how AI and a distributed workforce can extend capacity, why the volunteer ‘ask’ must match scientific requirements, and how policy makers, funders, scientists, communities and program operators can maximise impact.

Meet the presenter
Dr Christopher Lawson is a marine ecologist whose work combines quantitative ecology, technology and community participation to improve marine conservation. After research on fisheries, shark and ray physiology, biologging and environmental change, he shifted toward coral reefs, developing scalable monitoring approaches that integrate citizen science, artificial intelligence and data-driven decision-making.
