We all have an intimate knowledge and experience of the passing of time, this much is clear. But it is not yet clear that we have a complete physical understanding of the arrow of time, nor of our experience of it. Making these matters worse, quantum theory seems to be trying its hardest to upend some of our deepest convictions about time (as well as space, for that matter).

Join UQ's Dr Peter Evans at our next BrisScience event, as he explores what we know about the arrow of time, and the perplexing set of challenges concerning time that quantum mechanics poses.

We are very excited to welcome you to The Edge. We'll be serving up delicious light refreshments and drinks after the presentation.

Meet the presenter

Professor James Watson

Dr Peter Evans is a Lecturer in Philosophy at UQ specialising in the philosophy of physics. His research interests include time and causation in modern physics, especially in the foundations of quantum mechanics, as well as the epistemology and methodology of science. He completed in 2021 an ARC Discovery Early Career Research Award project, "A philosophical exploration of simulating and controlling the quantum world", which examines how a novel laboratory technique, analogue quantum simulation, illuminates the epistemology of quantum control. Dr Evans's philosophical research is informed by the latest experimental and theoretical results from the physical sciences.

About BrisScience

BrisScience is a monthly lecture series that brings science out of the labs and to the people, making it accessible to all – from scientists, to scientists-at-heart.

Run by The University of Queensland, BrisScience has been delivering engaging lectures on diverse topics from local and international scientists for over a decade.

BrisScience speakers are leaders in their given fields and deliver dynamic presentations based on cutting-edge research.

The University of Queensland has been running BrisScience since 2005, bringing the best and brightest scientific minds to the people of Brisbane – from early career researchers to Nobel Laureates!
