There's much to be gained from recycling organic wastes. While gardeners appreciate them in the veggie patch, at the global scale, compost has the power to boost food production and mitigate climate change.

The ancient technology of composting uses microbes to convert diverse organic wastes into more stable organic matter. Used with scientific precision in modern contexts, compost can improve soil fertility, raise crop yield and reduce our greenhouse footprint.

Join us as UQ's Professor Susanne Schmidt explores research investigating the power of compost.

Meet the presenter

Susanne SchmidtProfessor Susanne Schmidt is a UQ-based educator and scientist with expertise in agro-ecology and sustainable food production. Her team researches fundamental and applied topics around plants, soil, organic wastes and recycling them as next-generation fertilisers. She contributes concepts and technologies for the circular nutrient economy, sustainable agriculture and the restoration of degraded land. Scientific discoveries include that organic nutrients nourish crops, which broaden the conventional views of plant nutrition that is based on mineral fertilisers alone.
