University of Queensland Bachelor of Science (Food Technology) student, Doris Wong, has been awarded the Pacific Seeds Scholarship for 2025.

The second-year student will receive $5,000 as part of the scholarship.

Ms Wong’s interest in agriculture blossomed after taking an elective at UQ.

“Although I’m study food technology, picking an agriculture elective showed me how interconnected the two fields are and how closely they work together in improving diet quality and food security,” she said.

What excites me is looking at the whole journey, from production right through to the food we eat, and finding ways to make that journey healthier and more sustainable.”

The young student was thrilled and grateful for the support of Pacific Seeds.

“I really appreciate the fact that the company is willing to support my interests and field of study – whether in research or practical field work.

“For me, the goal is to understand how innovation in agriculture flows through the food system and shape the food on our tables.

“Whatever I end up doing with Pacific Seeds, I know the knowledge and skills will be transferable and valuable, and I will soak up as much knowledge as I can and carry those experiences into whatever I do next.

“I’m still exploring my path, but I have great interest in improving food security and the sustainability of our food system.

“This scholarship is about discovering opportunities – from production through to consumption – and learning how different disciplines can come together.

“Ultimately, I want to discover where I can best contribute to creating healthier and more resilient food systems.”

Ms Wong hopes the experience will branch out beyond her career, offering a chance to really make a difference.

“I really value giving back to the community, which is why I’ve stayed active in volunteering, mentoring, and leading the Food Science Club at UQ,” she said.

“Those experiences showed me firsthand how cross-disciplinary collaboration fosters real-world impact.

“That’s why I’m so excited about this opportunity with Pacific Seeds - it represents not just support for my studies, but a chance to learn, grow, and contribute to something bigger than myself.”
