After the success of the University of Queensland’s 2019 Giving Day, up-and-coming young scientists are now able to reach their goals while tackling financial hardship.

UQ’s last Giving Day, held on 23 October 2019, was a runaway success, with generous donors giving approximately $18,000 to the Future Scientist Scholarship, helping empower more students than ever.

The Future Scientist Scholarship helps provide study opportunities to budding future scientists, whose current financial situation may otherwise prevent them from studying science at UQ.

Elyssa Hawke is one of three Future Scientist Scholarship recipients, including Naran Gillies and Charlie Fuller, and she’s now able to complete a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours).

“This scholarship is the ultimate blessing,” Ms Hawke said.

“I can now focus my energy on my studies, and I’m working hard, really hoping to achieve some exceptional results.

“In my spare time I’m also now able to volunteer in veterinary hospitals, gaining some valuable experience.”

Out of the over-$2 million raised during UQ Giving Day, the Future Scientist Scholarship was the most popular fund donated to across UQ’s faculties and institutes.

This generosity has already had a real impact on Ms Hawke’s future.

She has been determined to pursue her dreams of becoming a veterinary scientist from a young age, driven by a passion for animals and an interest in understanding organisms.

“It’s really a dream come true,” she said.

“And this scholarship will also help minimise stress and anxiety, it – in a very real way – allows me to afford extra therapy sessions.

“This scholarship gives me extra confidence to get through my studies and go far beyond.”

The Future Scientist Scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time student who has experienced financial hardship.

The size and distribution of the scholarship value is determined by public donations, which are then matched by UQ’s Faculty of Science.

With financial stresses lifted, Ms Hawke is able focus her attention on academic results.

“Alongside a career in veterinary science, I’m hoping to educate the community on effective ways to conserve natural environments,” she said.

“I’m extremely grateful to those who contributed to the Future Scientist Scholarship – I really hope to honour these generous donations by working incredibly hard.

“It is such a kind gesture.

“I really hope that others can consider giving back to the community in this way and supporting future young scientists.”

Donations are now able to be made for the 2021 Future Scientist Scholarship. If you would like to make a contribution, please visit the UQ Giving Page.
