Dr Viviana Gonzalez-Astudillo's research has included the largest retrospective and prospective study of koala morbidity and mortality conducted in Queensland, and likely Australia.

Additional research includes investigations into the role of uromodulin in kidney health, Koala Retrovirus (KoRV) in primary bone neoplasms, koala fur as a non-invasive health indicator, the timing of growth plate fusion using radiography, and the spontaneous healing of long bone fractures.

Together, these studies improve our understanding of koala biology and disease, supporting evidence-based conservation and clinical management of this endangered species.
