Research into the biology of koalas, their conservation and management

Bill Ellis studied koala ecology at UQ for his PhD and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Centre for Research into Endangered Species at San Diego Zoo, before returning to UQ to establish the Koala Ecology Group (KEG) in 2011.

The KEG maintains study sites across Queensland including at St Bees Island, a project that has included annual koala monitoring surveys since 1998.

Other sites include Oakey - at a location established in the 1970s and still home to koalas, and the Brisbane Valley, where annual surveys have been undertaken since 2013.

The KEG is a small team of dedicated koala researchers, specialising in field research including drone surveys, koala capture and sampling.
