Executive Dean's Message - January 2019

Dear Colleagues,

Melissa BrownHappy New Year! I hope you had a refreshing end-of-year break with friends and family and are ready for another exciting year in the Faculty of Science.

First of all, congratulations to Professor Mary Garson, who was made a Member of the Order of Australia in this year’s Australia Day Honours list. Professor Garson has been recognised for her services to education, particularly to organic chemistry, and as a champion for women in science. She’s a role model to thousands of UQ students and staff (including me) and a trailblazer in her field.

This year’s Faculty of Science Awards Ceremony will be held next Wednesday, 6 February. This is a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our students, colleagues and peers. Please join us at the important event – you can register online. To have a look at all of the nominees in all five categories, please visit the Faculty of Science Awards intranet page.

Other upcoming awards include the 2019 UQ Awards for Excellence, Queensland Women in STEM Prize, Queensland great awards and UQ’s Higher Education Academy (HEA) Fellowships.

I’m greatly looking forward to the Faculty of Science Teaching and Learning Forum next week. Further information is provided below. Hope to see you there!

Please also note that Gatton Research Day is on Friday 22 February and provides an opportunity to see some of the great research conducted at on the Gatton campus. This event will feature presentations from guest speakers and tours of our research facilities.

And finally, make sure you take a moment to read through some of our media highlights, including a $14.7 million partnership involving Paul Young, Keith Chappell and Dan Watterson to help tackle the world’s next epidemic, and a story featuring geology students venturing to Mt Everest as part of an advanced field experience course. You can also read some of our scientists’ latest stories in The Conversation.

Kind regards,

Professor Melissa Brown
Executive Dean
