Benefits of mentoring

The Science Mentor program offers you the chance to:

  • build your employability: employers see volunteerism as evidence of an applicant's initiative, social responsibility and skills development. The Science Mentor program is an accredited activity of the UQ Employability Award
  • add to your professional development and leadership skills
  • give something back: as a Science Mentor, you're well placed to provide reassurance to first years who might be feeling overwhelmed
  • learn from UQ Science's Engagement staff: we're happy to share skills and expertise in event planning and promotion. By learning about events and showing your leadership and interpersonal skills, you can build relationships with us, which could lead to casual paid employment.

Your commitment

You must commit to a minimum of about 20 hours each semester, totalling 40 hours for the year.

Activities include:

  • (essential) attend at least two UQ Faculty of Science Induction Days in February, which are held before and during Orientation in Semesters 1 and 2
  • organise and participate in social events in UQ St Lucia's SLC in weeks 1 to 4 of Semesters 1 and 2
  • answer queries posted to the first-year and course Facebook pages
  • share information with the wider student community through word of mouth, course Facebook pages and college noticeboards
  • work with the UQ Science Engagement team to organise and promote other activities throughout the year. We welcome suggestions for activities that would suit all science students.

What we're looking for

Expectations:

  • be a positive role model
  • orientate new students to UQ and make them aware of services and programs
  • enthusiastically promote and participate in organised activities throughout the year
  • help create a friendly, inclusive and social environment.

Desired qualities:

  • an ability to relate to others
  • a friendly disposition
  • a desire to help
  • good communication skills
  • demonstration of initiative
  • ability to work as part of a team and above all, a passion for science.
