Why I’m a staff donor

29 Sep 2025

Julie BaglotJulie Baglot, Senior Manager, Academic Services at The University of Queensland's Faculty of Science has been a staff donor for many years, and shares what it means to her.

“When I first started working at UQ, I didn’t imagine I would become a donor. Initially, the idea of giving financially to my employer felt counterintuitive - I was getting paid to work here so wasn’t that enough to support the university through my job?," she said.

“However, over time, I’ve witnessed firsthand UQ’s incredible impact, particularly in research and student support. Hearing from students and seeing the tangible outcomes of scholarships and support programs changed my perspective.

“I realised that my contribution could help extend opportunities to students who might otherwise struggle to access or complete their education.

“For several years now, I’ve chosen to give to student scholarship funds, with a particular focus on the School of Veterinary Science Students Placement Support. This fund helps students who face financial hardship or need additional support to undertake mandatory work experience placements essential to becoming a veterinarian. Supporting this initiative aligns deeply with my values and my commitment to equity in education.

“Being a staff donor is now a point of pride for me. It’s a way to actively contribute to the kind of inclusive, supportive university community I believe in.”

From 1-15 October this year, the Faculty of Science is rallying behind four incredible causes that reflect the heart and soul of our community: Science Leaders Scholarship - empowering the next generation of scientific trailblazers, School of Veterinary Science Students Placement Support - helping future vets gain hands-on experience without the financial pressure, CoralWatch - protecting our reefs through citizen science, and the UQ Gatton Past Students Association - celebrating the legacy of our Gatton alumni.

Let’s show the world what the UQ Science community can do when we come together.
